Blogger Frustrations Take Two – Boxes

Boxes and boxes 1

So as many of you might have read I suffer from what I call Aussie Internet Syndrome or AIS for short. It’s where we get third world country speeds and can’t really shop events at the beginning because it takes half an hour or longer for anything to rez. This is a constant frustration for anyone living in Australia who doesn’t have cable and relies on ADSL2+ and especially for anyone through my isp Dodo (I know, I know, first red flag is in the name, I should have realized this before I got into a contract.) Anyway, as the SL blogging community is in a buzz about Hair Fair I thought I’d save myself the lag for a while and slowly go through the demo’s and work out what I wanted before going. Try and save on time and Lag.

This brings me to my frustration. Why do so many creators put boxes within boxes within boxes? Are they russian nesting dolls? Is it a game of pass the parcel? It kind of reminds me of something we did to my step dad when we were kids, we got a matchbox car, stuck it in a small box, put it in a medium box then put it in a large box and filled the large box with paper. It was a prank. Are we all being punked? Are creators sitting there having a giggle while we go “really? another box? WHYYYY?!!!” I made a few appliers a while back for the WowMeh body and I put all of my objects into a folder and then put them up on marketplace. I really do wonder what the reasoning behind putting boxes within boxes is, especially when it’s just as easy to put a folder in the same box. I see some creators that put folders in, then some that put boxes in. It just baffles me as to why this changes so much. I’d love for a creator to comment and let me know if they do put boxes within boxes and if so why so I can understand it better and not feel like I’m being watched with a camera as some sort of second life prank show while I pull out my hair.

It’s not just hair fair either. I’d say a lot of bloggers go through this while going through review copies, you put something on that’s in a folder thinking it’s the actual item, nope, it’s a box. So you detach it, rez it, unpack it, to find another box. Finally after unpacking the next box you get to the item. It really does take up so much time unpacking this way. I think when I find a review or bought item that I unpack and the item is there straight away I do a happy dance. I sing the praises of the creator for actually making my life easy. It brings me so much joy to find an item without having to unpack two boxes.

So what about you guys? Do you find this frustrating as well? Do you have a theory as to why this happens? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Speaking of the Hair fair demo’s, I’m trying on the Mithral * Verbena BUSTY ~DEMO~ in these pics, I’ve never heard of this store or of a lot of the others at the hair fair, but this hair and a lot of the others from unknown stores are totally awesome! If you haven’t already, check out the smaller, more unknown stores, it’s easy to get caught up in the latest releases from the big names but some of these small stores are amazing!

  1. Ohohoh! I feel you so much! A creator I blogged for some time ago sent out a fatpack vendor boxes. I’d open the vendor after telling caspertech that I was not going to allow it to access my lindens, then I’d receive the box of fatpacks. I’d open that fatpack box and inside were separate boxes for each individual colour from the fatpack, these were full outfits – inside each of the individual colour boxes – a boxed pair of matching shoes as well.. Just boxes and boxes and boxes, hahaha!

  2. I personally love the creators who put a script in the box to auto-deliver the items to your inventory – in a folder. You rez/wear the item and it does all the rest. Easy peasy! I hate the box within a box within a box thing too – odds are, I get tired of opening boxes, and then your item sits while I blog other stuff I got to in one click. 🙂

  3. Because you can’t put multiple folders in a box. If someone is sending you 3 hairs to demo and/or blog, if they were to drop the 3 different folders (1 for each of the hairs)into a box it would automatically discard the folders and put all items into one folder in alphabetical order. Then it would be up to you to sort it out and figure out which hud goes to which hair etc. Hairs would be easy to sort. Can you imagine if someone sent you 3 outfits all mixed together in 1 folder? That would be a greater nightmare to sort than it is opening separate boxes, imho
